The Importance Of A Healthy Lifestyle In Maintaining Good Vision As We Grow Older

THE 5TH OF MARCH, 2022, IS A SATURDAY. (HealthDay News) — A new study suggests that those who exercise regularly have a lower risk of heart disease. Experts advise that limiting your alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight may help safeguard your vision as you age.
When you drink in moderation to excess, you increase your chances of developing a sight-threatening disease known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A poor diet and being overweight may also increase your chances of developing AMD, the most prevalent cause of blindness in those over the age of 50 in the United States.

In the words of Dr. Dianna Seldomridge, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “We already knew that making healthy lifestyle choices might help avoid macular degeneration.”
The academy’s Seldomridge said in a press release that “we now know that alcohol use may be another modifiable risk factor that we can regulate to minimize the likelihood of getting this potentially devastating eye illness.”
After reviewing seven previous studies on the association between alcohol use and early AMD, the researchers came to this result. The results were published in the journal Current Eye Research last year, and they were well received.

AMD affects around 2.1 million people in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as the population grows older, the predicted number of persons suffering from AMD is expected to more than quadruple, reaching 5.44 million by 2050.
The macula, a part of the retina crucial for central vision, is damaged by the degenerative condition. Over time, the loss of central vision may make it difficult to do routine tasks such as driving, reading, and distinguishing between people’s faces.

Although genetics have a role in the development of AMD, you may lower your risk by adopting a healthy lifestyle. What you need to know is as follows:

  • Include leafy greens, bright fruits and vegetables, and fatty fish in your diet to receive the vitamins you need!
  • Maintain healthy body weight and general well-being. All three of these risk factors for AMD – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease – are present. Exercise is an effective method of reducing some of these health hazards.
  • Don’t take up smoking. As a result of their smoking habits, smokers are more prone than non-smokers to develop eye illnesses, including AMD.
  • Consult with an ophthalmologist. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, all healthy people should get a complete eye checkup by 40 to screen for potentially blinding eye conditions.
