'Misconception' Cleared Up By Record-Setting Quarterback Bailey Zappe Before The NFL Draft, Which Explains His Grin

In team interviews, scouts and coaches ask Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe the following questions: How will your performance transfer to the next level?

As far as Zappe is concerned, the inquiries arise from a place of “curiosity,” with the Victoria, Texas, native eager to explain why he feels his FBS-record 5,987 yards passing and 62 touchdowns in one season were not a fluke.

To be sure, he recognizes that an Air Raid offensive will not be a perfect match for the pro-style systems to which an NFL club would need him to get acclimated. The level of competition will rise, much as Zappe did when he transitioned from Houston Baptist’s FCS opponents in his first three seasons to Western Kentucky’s more challenging Conference USA opponents in his fourth season.

Zappe, on the other hand, is prepared for the inquiries. When he was questioned, his answer was

“I grin like I’m doing it right now,” Zappe said on Wednesday, speaking from the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. In terms of the Air Raid tree we ran with (offensive coordinator Zach) Kittley, there was a lot of misinformation out there. Many of it was things that many folks were familiar with from the NFL and other collegiate offenses. We did a lot of pure progression stuff, which gave us many opportunities to check in and out of plays and analyze defenders’ refined progressions. “Some of that stuff will transfer over to the NFL,” says the coach.
