Maksim Chmerkovskiy has returned to the United States after a long absence.

The Dancing With the Stars star arrived in Los Angeles on March 2 after fleeing his home in Ukraine and boarding a flight out of Poland. He had been missing since his escape.

Photos acquired by E! News show Maksim greeting his wife, fellow dancer Peta Murgatroyd, in a lengthy embrace at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Another video provided by Entertainment Tonight showed him kissing Peta, and he was also filmed doing so.

Maksim, who was in Ukraine to serve as a judge on World of Dance, sent a video message on his Instagram page announcing that he was boarding a flight to Los Angeles just hours before arriving there. “I’m at the airport right now,” he says in the video. “I’m completely prepared to leave.”

Since February 24, Maksim has been delivering daily updates from Ukraine, presenting firsthand descriptions of the country’s situation during a Russian military invasion. He even revealed last week that he had been detained. “The streets are a complete mess. At one time, I was taken into custody… but everything is an OK promise, “He went on to describe his trip from Ukraine through Poland and then on to the United States of America.

Maksim reported on February 28 that he had fled from Ukraine and was now traveling by train to Warsaw, Poland. “All I can say [at this point] is that I’m a large guy with nothing but a bag, and it’s TRAUMATIZING,” he said on his Instagram account. “This time of year, I’m in a cabin with four parents and seven children (ages two to eleven) in an area that is normally only inhabited by three people at a time. This specific wagon can accommodate up to 30 passengers at a time. We’ve been instructed that we must fit 135.”

Peta issued an appeal on Instagram only a few days before Maksim could safely flee Ukraine, urging her fans to keep him and the people of Ukraine in their thoughts and prayers.
